CCS Insight Software Development Research Podcasts (Systems Engineering)

Bola Rotibi joins Erik Kruse, Strategic Marketing Manager and Network Society Evangelist at Ericsson and Dr Catherine Mulligan, Head of Digital Strategy and Economics of Future Cities Catapult to discuss how IoT is providing one of the backdrops to disruptive industrial innovation. As one of the world’s major provider of communication technologies and services, with a global leadership position, Mobile World Congress (MWC) is of course a natural home for Ericsson to showcase the investments and advances it has been making towards providing a communications network capable of sustaining the digital economy.

On day two of Mobile World Congress 2015, Digital Catapult, a nationally funded body with the goal of accelerating UK’s best digital ideas to market in order to support the UK economy, hosted an industrial IoT focused panel discussion for the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) body. Bola Rotibi of CIC, caught up with two of the panellists – Mischa Dohler and Catherine Mulligan – to discuss points raised on the panel and expose the realities of a burgeoning Industrial IoT market, particularly for SME organisations.

Governments can do a lot to help progress an emerging market. One such way would be in providing an environment that lessens the load and risk of upfront investment and offering support in key areas such as analysis, testing and legislative requirements. This can help to both encourage and drive innovation. More importantly it opens the way for the broadest engagement especially from Small Medium Enterprise (SME) organisations that don’t have the R&D capacity of larger firms or the means to efficiently and effectively navigate the different partner relationships that might be required. The UK government has invested in a network of “Catapults” to accelerate the best ideas to market in order to create new products, services, jobs and value for the UK economy. Clive Howard of CIC caught up with Dr Maurizio Pilu of the UK’s Digital Catapult to understand  how and where IoT fits in their investment and acceleration plans.

In this podcast CIC’s Bola Rotibi caught up with Dr Mike Short, Vice President Research and Development at Telecoms giant Telefónica on day one of Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015. Although at the start of the four day event, Dr Mike short offers some fascinating insights into the state of the Internet of Things market today. Of particular note are the thoughts that he proffers on the role that MWC as an exhibition and the GSMA as a global body offer in driving and shaping the digital economy that IoT will undoubtedly help to deliver.

Interoperability is a concept that defines the ability for different systems, tools or processes to work together and exchange or reuse information. However, in reality, pursuing a strategy for interoperability can require more complex considerations.

For instance, we are seeing greater connectivity between the embedded world and embedded systems and the Internet. This is presenting some interesting potentials and challenges. There are many interactions throughout the engineering lifecycle for example the addressing of bugs in the system prior to deployment and also once delivered into the field.

There are dependencies that span people, processes, implementation and tools. The question is how to make things interoperable.
